What to see in Benissa: a complete guide to discovering the jewel of the Marina Alta

Benissa is one of the most charming destinations on the Costa Blanca, a place where history, traditional architecture, and Mediterranean coves come together to offer a truly unique experience.

The Cathedral of the Marina Alta: a symbol of Benissa

When you arrive in Benissa, the first thing that stands out is its majestic white church, visible from several points around the municipality. Lit up at night, this temple is known as the Cathedral of the Marina Alta, one of the town’s most recognizable landmarks.

Built in the 1920s, during a period of prosperity known as the “happy twenties,” the church was raised thanks to the joint efforts of Benissa’s residents, reflecting the town’s deep-rooted cultural and religious identity.

Exploring Benissa’s historic old town

Your stroll through the old town can begin at the Town Hall, a historic building that used to operate as a Hospital for the Poor. From here, you can see extensive citrus orchards and the start of the path once used by the old ribereros, workers who temporarily emigrated to harvest rice along the Valencian coast.

As you walk along Purísima Street, you’ll discover one of the most beautiful corners of Benissa: balconies with wrought-iron railings decorated with flowers, beside white houses bearing coats of arms that reflect the municipality’s seigneurial history.

The narrow, peaceful streets invite you to get lost at an unhurried pace as you visit emblematic places such as the Casa de la Cultura or the Lonja de Contratación, the oldest building in Benissa, which now houses the Ethnographic Museum.

In the surrounding area of the former prison, you’ll find the medieval core known as the “cogollo,” a district that preserves the town’s historic and architectural character.

Benissa’s best coves

One of Benissa’s biggest attractions is its coastline, which has remained practically untouched despite large-scale development. Its more than 4 kilometres of shore conceal small coves of extraordinary natural beauty.

Among the most noteworthy are:

  • La Fustera

  • Cala Pinets

  • Cala de l’Advocat

  • Cala Baladrar

These coves are perfect for relaxing, enjoying the Mediterranean Sea, and switching off in a natural setting.

Things to do in Benissa: nature and the sea

In addition to its historical heritage, Benissa offers a wide range of activities for fans of active tourism. Among the most popular options are:

  • Sea excursions along the coast

  • Scuba diving in crystal-clear waters

  • Fishing in quiet coves

  • Hiking with views of the Mediterranean

Why visit Benissa

Benissa is an ideal destination for those looking to combine culture, history, and nature on the Costa Blanca. Its well-preserved old town, architectural heritage, and hidden coves make it a perfect choice for everything from short getaways to a full holiday.
